Good news for tourists
I read today that the iconic Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign is going to get a small parking area. This is excellent news!
I remember on our first trip to Vegas, that sign was on my ‘must see’ list as with most tourists. It is on an island on South Las Vegas Boulevard. I have seen people running across 3 lanes of busy traffic just to get their picture taken in front of the sign.
The plan is to add 12 parking spots just south of the sign which would include 2 handicapped spots and 2 places for limos and RV’s.
I read that the 80+ year old woman who created the sign has been honked at, cursed at and nearly ran over when she is requested to get a promo picture in front of her sign. It was hard enough for me and my young family to cross that street, I can’t imagine trying to lead my 84 year old gram to the sign for a picture, it is hardly worth the risk.
Anyone who lives here or has visited here, know that the people all drive like idiots! If there are people getting their picture taken, I admit it, I slow down and gawk like everyone else because I love to see happy people. But that increases the risk of hitting a pedestrian because we aren’t watching where we are going.
The parking area should be started and completed next year and will only cost $400,000 to $500,000. Well worth the cost!
