Rock Dolls
As kids we never had dolls. My sisters, cousins and I would play with rock dolls back in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. We could find real pretty rocks in the old gravel bar at Baron. The good one’s would be 8″ wide and 14″ long.
We put a face on them and used corn silks for the hair. My first pair of silk underwear my momma bought me was cut up to make clothes for my rock dolls. My cousin Jewell got upset because her doll wasn’t the prettiest. She went to the gravel bar, got her a doll (rock) so big that she could hardly carry it. She dressed it up and said, “Now who has the prettiest doll?” My cousin Louise threw her doll at her, hit her in the head and knocked her out! After that Jewell quit us and got her a boyfriend.
The first real doll that could have been min was at Christmas. At our school Christmas play, Grace took me to the Christmas tree to show me a doll that was hanging on it. She told me that it was mine and she had bought it for me. My name was on it and it was the prettiest doll I had ever seen. It was big and had long black hair and a pretty red dress. I couldn’t wait for the presents to be handed out! All of the sudden the lights went out and when they came back on, someone had stolen my doll. Needless to say, I cried for weeks.

This would explain why my Gram Sadie always bought me dolls! I never liked them and it kinda made her mad. : )
