Money was scarce but if a family was fortunate enough to have a team of horses or mules, a few chickens and maybe 40 acres of rented or owned land, they would have enough to eat and wear. Almost no one had enough to spend for things we didn’t need. We learned a lot about surviving on less but I wouldn’t want another generation to have to go through another great depression.

Some of the prices of farm products in the thirties: Eggs were $0.06 a dozen, hogs were $0.04 a pound, good milk cows were $15, cows for slaughter were 1 1/2 cent per pound.

The things we bought were also priced low, so it all equaled out: shoes were approximately $1.25, overalls $1, gasoline $0.12 per gallon.
