Family Stories
Several years ago I asked my Gram (Grandma) and her brothers, sisters and cousins to relay to me stories and recipes from their childhood. Word passed quickly and I was getting letters from family members from all over. At the time I could only type 32 WPM but I managed to type a Family Cookbook & Storybook. I took the pages to Kinko’s and made serveral copies and had them spiral bound. They looked pretty darn good. I thought it would be a great idea to get the family together and everyone could bring a dish that they contributed to the cookbook and we could sit around and talk about their childhood days.
The recipes were something else! Good old fashioned country cooking. Most of which I would never eat! Maybe it is from eating this stuff when I was little that I am now a vegetarian!!! We’re talking about “Kush Peter” Chicken n dumplins, Fried rabbit, grape dumplins, vinegar rolls (mmm mmm good!), sorghum molasses candy and lots of other goodies.
I believe it was in May of 1996 that I completed the cookbooks and we all met in a small Oklahoma where they were all raised. We had the best time! Everyone enjoyed the books so much that it occurred to me today that I should share them with the world instead of keeping them a ‘family secret’. Gram still talks about it and how much it meant to all of our family.
I love my family very much and I enjoyed sharing the cookbook/ storybook with all of them, I am thrilled to share it with you too.
